Module 7
Question 7.4:
Closed-coiled Helical Springs
Two springs are parallel connected to carry a load. One spring 16 coils with a 7mm wire diameter and a mean diameter of 38mm, the second spring has 19 coils with a 5mm wire diameter and mean diameter of 42 mm the maximum shear stress in the springs must not exceed 360 Mpa when a load is applied.
G=82Gpa
Calculate:
1) The total stiffness of the springs.
2) The maximum allowable load that can be applied.
3) The stress in each spring.
4) The deflection of the springs.
5) The strain energy in the springs.
