Stiff hips after 50? These 12 gentle moves will help you open them back up.
Tight hips rarely show up all at once. They creep in quietly. Your first steps in the morning feel stiff. Your stride gets shorter. Bending down to put on socks or tie your shoes takes more effort. Getting down to the floor, and back up again, starts to feel like a project. That's not just age. Years of sitting shorten the muscles around your hips, and when the hips stop moving well, your lower back and knees pick up the slack.
This 12-minute follow-along routine is designed for adults 50 to 65 who want to move more freely again. You'll wake up your glutes, gently stretch the front of your hips and your inner thighs, loosen your lower back, and practice the deep squat that keeps you able to get down and up from the floor.
What this routine helps with:
Morning stiffness in the hips and lower back
A longer, steadier walking stride
Bending, reaching, and putting on socks and shoes
Getting in and out of the car more easily
Side-to-side balance and stability
How to follow along:
Each exercise runs about 40 seconds, with a short break before the next move
Use a mat, and keep a wall or chair nearby for support
Move slowly and stay in a comfortable, pain-free range. Never force a stretch
Try it 3 to 5 times a week for best results
Stay with it for a few weeks, and notice how walking, bending and standing up start to feel easier.
