Push-ups hurt after 50? You don't have to give up on a strong chest.
For a lot of men, push-ups stop feeling good somewhere along the way. Wrists ache. A shoulder pinches or clicks. Getting down to the floor, and back up again, becomes harder than the workout itself. So the push-ups stop, and slowly, the chest and shoulders lose strength.
This 17-minute chair chest workout trains the same muscles as a push-up, your chest, shoulders, triceps and upper back, without putting your body weight on your wrists or your shoulder joints. No floor. No weights. No gym. Just you and a sturdy chair.
You'll warm up the shoulder joint, press in three different directions to work the upper, middle and lower chest, and balance it all out with moves for your upper back and shoulder blades, so your posture gets better, not more hunched. We finish with gentle mobility to leave your shoulders loose and relaxed.
Why it matters: this is the strength you use every day. Pushing open a heavy door. Lifting a suitcase into the trunk. Pushing yourself up from the couch, or off the floor after a fall. Keep it strong, and you keep doing those things yourself.
How to follow along:
Each exercise runs about 45 seconds, followed by a short preview of the next move
Move slowly and with control. Quality beats speed
Keep breathing. Never hold your breath during the squeezes
Stay in a pain-free range. If something hurts, make the movement smaller or skip it
Try this workout 2 to 3 times a week and notice how pushing, lifting and reaching start to feel easier.
