A poison so deadly it could burn all of creation. Every god ran from it. Except one. This is the story of why Lord Shiva drank the Halahala poison and became Neelkanth, the blue-throated one, as told in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana. Cursed by the sage Durvasa, the devas lose their strength to the asuras. Lord Vishnu tells them to churn the ocean of milk for amrit, the nectar of immortality. Mount Mandara becomes the churning rod, Vasuki the king of serpents becomes the rope, and Vishnu takes the form of Kurma, the giant tortoise, to hold up the sinking mountain. But the first thing to rise from the ocean is not nectar. It is poison. The devas and asuras run to Mount Kailash, Mahadev drinks the poison to save the world, and Goddess Parvati holds it in his throat, which turns blue forever. Then the treasures rise: Kamadhenu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Dhanvantari carrying the amrit.
