In the Bronze Age, on the island of Crete, a people built the first great palaces in Europe, painted their walls with leaping bulls and dolphins, and traded across the whole Mediterranean. Then they vanished so completely that for three thousand years the world remembered them only as a myth: King Minos, the maze called the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur waiting at its heart. We call them the Minoans, and we still cannot read their writing, or even say what they called themselves. What follows is the rise and fall of Europe's first civilization: the maze-like palace of Knossos, the bull-leapers who vaulted over charging bulls, the sea power that felt safe enough to build no walls, and the port of Akrotiri, buried whole by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. Here is the part most people get wrong: the eruption did not wipe the Minoans out overnight. They lived on for generations, until the mainland Greeks, the Mycenaeans, took over Knossos, and their world slid into a dark age and, in the end, into legend. A great sea power at the height of its glory, struck by a catastrophe out of the sea and then lost to memory, is exactly the kind of story that legends grow around. Some people have wondered whether the Minoans became Plato's Atlantis. Most scholars doubt it. But the real lost world is remarkable enough without the myth. A note on the history: the date of the Thera eruption is still debated (estimates range across the 1600s and 1500s BC), the eruption did not destroy Minoan civilization in a single day, and the link to Atlantis is a popular hypothesis rather than established fact. Where the record is uncertain, this video says so. ⏱️ Chapters: 00:00 A civilization lost to myth 01:18 The rise on Crete 03:45 The golden age 05:17 The eruption and the fall 08:27 What remains Empires fall.
