Raphael, the Companion Healer — Episode 3 | The Three Archangels

His name is a promise: "God heals." Episode 3 of The Three Archangels walks the road with Raphael, the Companion Healer, slowly, for those who have never been taught his story. His whole story lives in the Book of Tobit, and we tell it whole: blind Tobit in Nineveh and Sarah in Ecbatana, praying at the same hour; the young Tobias sent on a far road with a companion named Azarias, who is more than he seems; the great fish of the Tigris, whose heart, liver, and gall carry the healing; the wedding night when the sorrow is driven out of the house, and a marriage that begins in prayer; the gall that opens a father's eyes; and the moment the companion at last speaks his name: "I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints." We say one honest word about his book: Tobit stands in the Catholic and Orthodox Old Testament, and tradition is named as tradition where the Church hands it down. The angels never handed people goods; they handed them words, courage, and knowledge of the road. Raphael's gift is healing, and company on the road.
