Emotional regulation isn't simply about knowing how to calm down when feelings become big. To support an autistic child with emotional regulation, we first need to understand what is creating the dysregulation, what their nervous system may be responding to and why their reaction makes sense.
In this lesson, Jackie explores some of the factors that can contribute to emotional dysregulation in autistic children, including sensory experiences, social demands, masking, transitions, unpredictability, thoughts, emotions and the body's stress response. You'll also revisit the escalation cycle and look at why co-regulation comes before self-regulation.
Jackie then brings the S.U.P.E.R. framework together through the lens of emotional regulation — looking at your own responses, understanding your child's individual needs and challenges, preparing and planning ahead, developing skills outside difficult moments, adapting the environment and using relationship, communication and emotional safety to support regulation.
Because supporting emotional regulation isn't just about what you do in the difficult moment. It's also about understanding what leads to that moment and what can be changed, supported or developed around it.

ABOUT THE AUTISM PARENTING PROGRAM
Most parenting advice starts with what to do.
The Parental Stress Centre starts somewhere different.
We help you understand why things are happening first. Because when behaviour makes sense, better decisions naturally follow.
This free 9-week program is designed to help parents and carers better understand themselves, their autistic child and what's happening beneath behaviour.
Throughout the program, you'll explore parental stress and self-awareness, the autistic brain, PDA, meltdowns and shutdowns, emotional regulation, skill development, school avoidance, relationships, communication, family dynamics and more.
The aim isn't to change who your child is. It's to help you understand them, support them and make more informed decisions about what they may need.
