DEPOSITION OF JENNIFER BRANTLEY, MD Non-Party Witness — Former OB-GYN Resident Physician, Memorial Health University Medical Center Joyner v. Memorial Health, Inc., et al. State Court of Chatham County, Georgia — Civil Action No. STCV16-01909-FO Jennifer Brantley, MD, was a second-year obstetrics and gynecology resident at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah in January 2015 and now practices obstetrics and gynecology in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is questioned about her residency and supervision, her evaluation of Vanessa Joyner and her note early on January 5, 2015, fetal monitoring, and hospital policies. Dr. Brantley is not a party to this case. Video-recorded on November 29, 2017, in Knoxville, Tennessee, before a court reporter. Counsel for the plaintiffs examined the witness; counsel for the Memorial defendants, who also represented Dr. Brantley as a former hospital employee, and counsel for Dr. Leaphart and Savannah Perinatology Associates also appeared. A deposition is sworn testimony given before trial and recorded for use in litigation. BACKGROUND Vanessa Joyner and Brock Joyner, individually and as parents and administrators of the estate of their son, Alexander Joyner, brought this suit against Memorial Health, Inc., and related Memorial entities; Savannah Perinatology Associates, Inc.; Laura Marion, MD; Lynn Leaphart, MD; and two nurses. The complaint alleges that on January 4, 2015, Ms. Joyner, then 30 weeks pregnant and with a history of chronic hypertension, was transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center to be evaluated for preeclampsia and placental abruption. The complaint alleges that over the next day she reported increasing abdominal pain and cramping, that fetal monitoring showed concerning changes, and that the defendants delayed recognizing a placental abruption and delivering the baby. The complaint alleges that an emergency cesarean was called at 10:30 a.m. on January 5, 2015, that Alexander was delivered at 10:48 a.m. with a large placental abruption, and that he died shortly after birth.
