7 Days in the Mountains Finding My Mother Pigs Giving Birth | Caring for & Bringing Them Home
When our free-roaming black sows are ready to farrow on Golden Ridge Farm, their natural instinct leads them deep into the rugged mountains to build hidden nests, turning this week into a 7-day journey up the steep forest trails to find & care for them! While pouring mash into the long wooden trough to feed my pig herd on the first morning, I noticed one of my heavily pregnant sows was missing. Climbing up the steep jungle paths to search through the dense brush, I was overjoyed to find her resting in a leafy hollow where she had safely given birth to a litter of adorable black piglets! Right away, I harvested fresh green papayas from the garden to simmer a rich, milk-boosting porridge over the wood fire, carrying buckets of warm feed up the mountain so the exhausted mother could eat right by her nest before I swept the farmyard clean. Over the next few days, after planting young forest saplings on the hillside, stacking timber poles, & playing with our feisty rooster, I swept out our palm-thatched barn & lined it with soft ferns & dry straw. Then, I climbed back up the mountain with my bamboo basket to gently carry all the tiny piglets down the trail while their devoted mother trotted closely behind me all the way home to nurse her babies while I fed salt to our goats. Later in the week, following a morning of chopping banana trunks & cassava to cook pig feed, my puppies helped me track down another sow farrowing beneath a rocky cliff, where I gathered dry grass to warm her nest & brought her hot papaya porridge. When a sudden torrential rainstorm hit the mountains, I rushed back into the pouring rain to cover the shivering litter with palm fronds, then built a sturdy bamboo & banana-leaf shelter with drainage trenches to keep the mother pig & her newborn babies warm, dry, & well-fed in the woods.
