Veteran Cop Gives an UNLAWFUL Order — It BACKFIRES in Court! At 2:30 a.m. on Fort Street in Detroit, cyclist David Pletz was ordered out of the roadway and back into a bike lane obstructed by construction signage and sandbags. He refused, was detained, and later faced two misdemeanor charges: disobeying a lawful police order and interfering with traffic. In court, the city relied on bodycam footage and testimony from a police sergeant with 27 years of experience. The defense focused on one central issue: Michigan law allows cyclists to move away from the right edge or bike lane when hazards make it unsafe or impractical to remain there. Cross-examination revealed that the officer was not familiar with the specific statutory exceptions involved in the case. The video also showed the obstruction inside the bike lane—and a large tanker successfully passing through the same roadway the cyclist was accused of blocking. The judge ultimately found Pletz not guilty on both counts, ruling that his actions fell within the legal exception and that the order directing him back into the obstructed lane was not lawful. Watch the full hearing and share your verdict: was the cyclist right to challenge the order, or should he have complied first and fought it later? #RightsOnTrial #CourtroomReality #EvidenceSpeaks #DetroitJustice #CyclingSafety
