Sarkhel Sambhaji Angre was a fearless naval commander whose power in the Arabian Sea forced even mighty European naval powers like the Dutch and the British to submit. His name was known far beyond India — from Indonesia to London — as that of an undefeated naval warrior. Unable to defeat him in battle, the cunning British attempted to defame him by labeling him the “Pirate Lord of the Indian Ocean.” In reality, Sambhaji Angre faithfully served the Maratha Empire as the chief of its navy. His loyalty and dedication were so profound that even after his death, his samadhi was revered by the Maratha navy, believed to bless naval missions and fulfill vows made by sailors.
