Burundian nationals living and working in Kenya are facing growing uncertainty following President William Ruto’s directive targeting foreign nationals engaged in hawking and small-scale retail businesses. President Ruto announced that enforcement would begin on September 7, 2026, arguing that petty trade and other low-capital businesses should primarily benefit Kenyan citizens, while foreign investors should bring substantial capital, create employment and contribute more broadly to Kenya’s economy. Although the Kenyan President did not single out Burundi or any specific nationality, his remarks triggered anxiety among many Burundian traders in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya. Some claimed that they had received threats, faced harassment or feared losing their businesses and property. These allegations require independent investigation and official confirmation.
