After eleven episodes of Stretch The Truth, we’ve explored tightness, flexibility, range of motion, effort, repetition, movement, learning and pain.
Now it’s time to answer the question behind the entire series:
Why Active Isolated Stretching?
After years of studying movement and working with athletes, office professionals, older adults and people simply trying to move more comfortably, I continued building my work around Active Isolated Stretching.
Not because I believe AIS is the only effective method.
I don’t.
Static stretching has a place.
Dynamic stretching has a place.
PNF has a place.
Yoga and other movement and bodywork approaches can have a place.
Different methods exist because people have different objectives.
What drew me to AIS was the objective I saw in it:
Not simply chasing the sensation of a stretch, but working systematically with movement and joint range of motion.
Many of the people I’ve worked with aren’t trying to become extraordinarily flexible.
They want to turn.
Reach.
Bend.
Walk.
Exercise.
Work.
Travel.
And continue participating in everyday life with movement available when they need it.
That’s the space in which AIS became important to my work.
This final episode isn’t an argument that everyone should choose AIS.
It’s an explanation of why I did.
And why I believe it deserves a place in the larger conversation about flexibility and movement.
If Stretch The Truth has accomplished anything, I hope it has encouraged you to ask better questions about your own movement.
Because better movement doesn’t begin with finding the “best” stretch.
It begins with better understanding.
Thank you for joining me for Season 1 of Stretch The Truth.
📖 The ideas continue in my book, Stretch the Truth.
Flexibility is not a stretch.
