Blurred vision, grittiness, redness or discomfort can all occur after cataract surgery — but how do you know what is part of normal recovery, when you should contact your surgical team, and when you need urgent eye assessment?
In this video, I explain how I think about symptoms after cataract surgery as an ophthalmologist. Rather than judging a symptom by its name alone, I look at four things: how severe it is, when it started, whether it is getting better or worse, and what other symptoms are happening at the same time.
We’ll cover common early symptoms such as blurred vision, grittiness, redness and light sensitivity, as well as important warning symptoms including sudden loss of vision, severe or worsening pain, new flashes or floaters, and a curtain or shadow across the vision.
If you currently have a sudden significant reduction in vision, severe or worsening pain, an increasingly red eye with worsening vision, or new flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, or a curtain or shadow across your vision, seek urgent eye assessment rather than waiting for an online answer.
