Root functions become much easier once you notice one simple idea:
𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
In this video, we build square root, cube root and higher root functions visually instead of memorizing their graphs.
We’ll understand:
• How swapping x and y reflects a graph across y = x
• Why y = √x comes from y = x²
• Why we must restrict the domain of x² before taking its inverse
• Why cube root behaves differently from square root
• Even roots vs odd roots
• The general form x^(1/n)
• Domain and range of different root functions
• Important fixed and crossover points
• How higher roots compare for different values of x
The central idea:
𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗽 x 𝗮𝗻𝗱 y → 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 y = x → 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Once you see that connection, √x, ∛x, ⁴√x and higher roots stop looking like unrelated graphs.
