Why do x², x⁴ and x⁶ look similar, but behave very differently depending on the value of x?
And why do odd powers behave differently from even powers?
In this video, we build an intuitive understanding of 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 using graphs and visual patterns, instead of memorizing individual shapes.
We start with the familiar functions:
• y = x
• y = x²
• y = x³
Then we extend the idea to:
• 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀: x²ⁿ
• 𝗢𝗱𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀: x²ⁿ⁻¹
𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱:
✓ Why even-power graphs are symmetric about the y-axis
✓ Why odd-power graphs are symmetric about the origin
✓ Why x² stays non-negative
✓ Why x³ passes smoothly through the origin
✓ How higher even powers become flatter near x = 0 and steeper outside |x| = 1
✓ Why x², x⁴, x⁶ and other even powers meet at important boundary points
✓ What happens when |x| lies between 0 and 1
✓ What happens when |x| is greater than 1
✓ Why negative x-values make odd-power comparisons more interesting
✓ How to quickly compare x², x⁴, x⁶ and higher powers without calculating every value
✓ Common mistakes students make while ordering powers
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀:
When |x| lies between 0 and 1 → 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿.
When |x| is greater than 1 → 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿.
At x = 0, all positive powers are equal to 0.
Once you understand these patterns, you don’t need to memorize dozens of separate graphs.
You can predict how a power function behaves by looking at just two things:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 + 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 x 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 −𝟭, 𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭.
