Why does 𝘅 − 𝟮 move a graph to the 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧? It feels backwards at first. That’s because there are two different kinds of graph transformations: • Changes 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 the function affect the 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁 • Changes 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 the function affect the 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁 In this video, we build the intuition visually using graphs instead of memorizing rules. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱: ✓ Why 𝗳(𝘅) + 𝗮 shifts a graph up ✓ Why 𝗳(𝘅) − 𝗮 shifts a graph down ✓ Why 𝗳(𝘅 + 𝗮) shifts a graph left ✓ Why 𝗳(𝘅 − 𝗮) shifts a graph right ✓ Why the “inside” sign seems flipped ✓ How input changes differ from output changes ✓ How to read transformations directly from equations ✓ How the rule extends to forms like 𝘆 = (𝘅 − 𝗵)² + 𝗸 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮: 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 And for inside shifts: 𝗳(𝘅 − 𝗮) → 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗳(𝘅 + 𝗮) → 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 Once you understand why this happens, graph transformations stop feeling like a sign trick you have to memorize. 📐 𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗣𝗧 Math & Physics, Made Visual.
