Les Indémodables is the most honest perfume house I own, and this is the story of the one number it prints everywhere except the box in your hand. In the small, feverish world of natural perfumery, Les Indémodables ("the timeless ones") is famous for a single radical act: it tells you, by weight, how much precious natural material is really in the bottle. Ten percent Sicilian orange. Five percent patchouli. A number you could, in theory, check against the price. I loved that idea. So, I picked up my own bottle to check — and found the same legal ingredient list printed on the back of every perfume ever made. The numbers are real. They're just on the website, in the house Charter, in the hands of the shops it trains - everywhere the house holds the microphone, and nowhere on the object I carried home. This is a full house profile and a real-time smelling of all seven bottles I own: Chypre Azural, Escale en Indonésie, Escale en Haïti, Oranger Sirocco, Immortelle Solaire, Cuir de Chine, and Vanille Havane. We get into what makes this house unlike almost anything else in niche: it was built backwards. Rémi Pulvérail spent two decades inside Givaudan before building his own extraction lab in the French Alps; the crops grown for him alone, the machines his, real ambergris tinctured for months, everything extracted with sound waves instead of heat. You cannot water down what you control all the way down to the plant. We also meet its creative director, Antoine Lie, the provocateur who in 2006 built Sécrétions Magnifiques, a perfume engineered to disgust. The easy story says he grew up and sold out to good taste. The truer story is that it's the same refusal, pointed a different way. And then we read what's actually in front of us: the chypre whose oakmoss shows up only in the legal small print, the "honest" percentages that add up to about twenty (so what's the other eighty?), and the name the house has quietly stopped telling — Florence Fouillet Dubois, the perfumer behind the launch collection.
