I bought Marc-Antoine Barrois Tilia (Quentin Bisch, 2024) on discount from an influencer, and what arrived at my door is what the market is calling, in 2024, my Lover. It is actually a Maiden.
This episode from The Perfumed Perspective audits the contemporary collapse of the Lover archetype into the Maiden register and maps the full five-archetype typology (Maiden, Mother, Crone, Lover, Sage) that contemporary perfume marketing has been deploying on women like me for forty years.
Bottles on the tray with full provenance:
Maiden: Giorgio Armani Giò (Françoise Caron at Firmenich, 1992, discontinued), Acqua di Gioia plus Glossier You (Frank Voelkl with Firmenich, 2017). Mother: Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. Crone: Jean Desprez Bal à Versailles (1962). Lover: Givenchy Amarige (Dominique Ropion, 1991) PLUS Marc-Antoine Barrois Tilia (Quentin Bisch, 2024), a two-bottle slot mapping the 1991 declarative-sexual Lover against the 2024 romantic-tender Lover. Sage: Amouage Opus XII Rose Incense (Bruno Jovanovic, 2019).
Contemporary market comparators:
Burberry Goddess (Amandine Clerc-Marie at Firmenich, 2023), three vanilla extractions threaded with lavender, the Mother bottle being marketed almost entirely to twenty-three-year-olds. Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa '59 in the Maiden field. Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower (Dominique Ropion, 2005) and Robert Piguet Fracas (Germaine Cellier, 1948) for the Lover. Comme des Garçons Avignon (Bertrand Duchaufour, 2002) and Le Labo Santal 33 for the Sage.
Central contemporary argument:
The 2024 Lover the market is selling, the linden-blossom soft-romantic register Tilia carries, is structurally closer to Maiden than to historical Lover. The carnal Lover (Amarige register) stopped selling somewhere around 2014, and the apparatus collapsed her sideways into a soft-tender register that reads as Maiden-with-a-partner. This is the sharper contemporary diagnostic the LW closes its market analysis on. I name the collapse explicitly on camera. I bought into it. I tell you on camera how I bought into it.
The integrated wearer holds a parliament of bottles because she holds a parliament of selves. The wearer who insists on a single signature has locked herself into a single archetype.
