Alfred the Great
Beneath a cold West Saxon sky,
The ravens circle, banners rise.
A horn is sounding from the hill,
The fields grow dark, the world stands still.
From Wessex came a younger son,
A crown he never thought he'd own.
When northern sails crossed England's shore,
He learned the weight of crown and war.
The Viking armies claimed the land,
Yet Alfred chose to make his stand.
With shield and spear, with faith and flame,
He gathered Wessex in his name.
Sound the horn and raise the shield,
The king of Wessex takes the field.
Alfred the Great, raise England's flame,
Let every Saxon speak your name.
From Wessex fields to southern sea,
Stand for the land that longs to be free.
In Athelney, among the reeds,
A fallen king prepared his deeds.
From hidden marsh to Edington,
He called his scattered warriors home.
The shield wall formed beneath the sun,
The battle roared, the day was won.
Yet Alfred knew that swords alone
Could never build a lasting throne.
Raise the book beside the blade,
A stronger kingdom must be made.
Alfred the Great, the crown held high,
Beneath the cross and winter sky.
When kingdoms trembled, one remained,
And Wessex rose to stand again.
He raised the burhs, he shaped the law,
He valued learning more than war.
The written word, the guarded town,
Became the pillars of his crown.
No king can halt the march of years,
No sword can silence every fear.
Yet wisdom joined with courage then,
And changed the fate of Englishmen.
Alfred the Great, let England sing,
For Wessex and its warrior king.
From ancient halls to ocean foam,
He fought to guard his people's home.
Alfred the Great, raise shield and flame,
Let generations speak your name.
Where Saxon banners faced the sun,
A greater English tale begun.
The war horn fades beyond the hill,
The ancient fields are quiet still.
Beneath the stars of Wessex land,
An old king's legacy still stands.
