Gone blank when asked about hobbies at a Dutch birthday party?
Learn Dutch with Leo and Maya in this A2-B1 lesson about talking naturally about your hobbies. You’ll learn three useful ways to answer “Wat doe jij in je vrije tijd?” (What do you do in your free time?) and turn an awkward silence into a real conversation.
Practice Dutch conversation, Dutch speaking, and Dutch listening with slowly spoken, everyday Dutch. You’ll also discover why your brain can go quiet under pressure and how practice makes conversations easier.
🎯 What you'll learn in this episode:
✅ Drie manieren om over je hobby te praten (three ways to talk about your hobby): ik hou van hardlopen (I love running), ik vind hardlopen leuk (I like running), mijn hobby is hardlopen (my hobby is running)
✅ Sportwerkwoorden (sport verbs): use spelen (to play) or doen aan (to take part in) for most sports — ik speel voetbal / ik doe aan voetbal (I play football), ik speel tennis / ik doe aan tennis (I play tennis) — but zwemmen (to swim) doesn't take spelen: ik zwem (I swim) or ik hou van zwemmen (I love swimming)
✅ Werkwoord + graag (verb + “gladly/happily”): ik lees graag (I like to read), ik kook graag (I like to cook), ik wandel graag (I like to walk), ik teken graag (I like to draw), ik fotografeer graag (I like to take photos), ik fiets graag (I like to cycle)
✅ Woordvolgorde met “in mijn vrije tijd” (word order with “in my free time”): the phrase comes first, followed by the verb — in mijn vrije tijd lees ik (in my free time, I read), in mijn vrije tijd kook ik graag (in my free time, I like to cook)
✅ Why your brain gets tired during a Dutch conversation: it is translating, searching for words, predicting, and checking grammar all at once. This cognitive load gets lighter with practice.
✅ Cultural tip—Dutch directness: short, clear answers are seen as honest and polite in the Netherlands, not rude.
✅ Verenigingen (clubs): why joining a Dutch hobby club, such as a voetbalvereniging (football club) or zangvereniging (singing club), is a relaxed way to practice Dutch with others—plus what a volkstuin (allotment garden) is.
✅ Veelgemaakte fouten (common mistakes):
❌ Ik hou van te lezen → ✅ Ik hou van lezen (no “te” before the verb)
❌ Ik ben interesseerd in voetbal → ✅ Ik ben geïnteresseerd in voetbal (geïnteresseerd with a “ge-”)
❌ Ik speel muziek → ✅ Ik maak muziek / ik speel gitaar (you play an instrument, but you make music)
❌ Mijn hobby zijn lezen en ik hou van sporten → ✅ Mijn hobby's zijn lezen en sporten (keep the same verb form in a list)
We speak slowly and repeat key sentences so A2-B1 learners can build confidence in everyday Dutch conversations.
Great for:
✅ Learners preparing for the Inburgering exam
✅ Learners practising spoken Dutch at A2 level
