Ik ging or ik ben gegaan? Dutch past tense explained (A2-B1) Want to tell your neighbor a story about this weekend without getting stuck on the verbs? In this A2-B1 Dutch lesson, Leo and Maya explain how to talk about yesterday, last week, or long ago. Learn Dutch through slowly spoken Dutch, clear explanations, and real sentences. You’ll practice Dutch speaking and Dutch listening for everyday conversations and stories. 🎯 What you'll learn in this episode: ✅ Wanneer gebruik je het perfectum en wanneer het imperfectum? (When do you use the perfect tense, and when do you use the imperfect tense?) Use the perfect tense in conversations and the imperfect tense in stories. ✅ Belangrijke vormen en voorbeelden (Important forms and examples): ik heb gewerkt (I worked / I have worked) ik ben gegaan (I went / I have gone) ik woonde (I lived) ik fietste (I cycled) ik heb lekker geslapen (I slept well) ik ben gisteren laat thuis gekomen (I came home late yesterday) ✅ Hoe kies je tussen hebben en zijn? (How do you choose between “to have” and “to be”?) Je gebruikt meestal zijn bij beweging van de ene plek naar de andere, en hebben bij de meeste andere werkwoorden. (You usually use “zijn” for movement from one place to another and “hebben” for most other verbs.) ✅ Oefenen met herhalen en ritme (Practising with repetition and rhythm): Repeat short sentences aloud, complete fill-in-the-blank exercises, and hear clear example sentences for everyday conversations and stories. ✅ Veelgemaakte fouten (Common mistakes): ❌ ik heb geen naar de winkel (“I have no to the shop”) → ✅ ik ben naar de winkel gegaan (I went to the shop) ❌ ik heb gegaan naar Amsterdam (I have gone to Amsterdam) → ✅ ik ben naar Amsterdam gegaan (I went to Amsterdam) ❌ ik heb gewerkt gisteren (I worked yesterday) → ✅ ik heb gisteren gewerkt (I worked yesterday) ✅ gewerkt met een t aan het eind (“gewerkt” with a “t” at the end) We speak slowly and repeat important sentences so A2-B1 learners can build confidence using the Dutch past tense. Great for: ✅ Inburgering exam learners ✅ Learners practising spoken Dutch at A2 level ✅ Learners practising Dutch at B1 level ✅ NT2 students ✅ New residents of the Netherlands ✅ Anyone who wants to improve their Dutch speaking and listening ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Opening and problem 1:21 – Two ways to talk about the past 3:33 – Why speaking Dutch feels tiring 5:17 – Have or be in the past tense 6:03 – Small sentence experiment 6:46 – Practice with example sentences 7:54 – Common mistakes 9:15 – Cultural tip 10:11 – Three practical exercises for this week 12:25 – Summary 13:18 – Closing 💬 Practice Dutch with us!
