Wax & Soul · Record No.1 — "The Small Hours" Two sides, two long nights. Side A walks out at 2 a.m. under the streetlights and rides an overnight bus into the sunrise. Side B starts over at midnight — a singing kettle, the last train home, a slow dance in low light — and ends with the lamp switched off and a quiet "goodnight, old friend." Neo-soul is the heart of it: warm Rhodes, round bass, dusty boom-bap drums. But the record takes a few turns along the way — a rainy jazz-rap confession, a 3 a.m. falsetto, an acoustic duet, a sunrise funk ride with horns, and a gospel organ in the small hours. Every song has its own oil pastel portrait: a different face, a different color, a different quiet moment. Play it when: the house is asleep and the kettle's on you're working late and want company, not noise the drive home is longer than you'd like the party's over and it's just the two of you Which track kept you company tonight? A2 Neon on the Wet Street — The rain just stopped; red and blue run across the road. A3 Unsent Letters — A shoebox under the bed, full of pages that all begin with "sorry." A4 Quiet Like the Rain — Rain on the glass, lamp off, talking to an empty chair. A5 Gentle With Myself — Called my mother on the phone. She said she's proud of me. A6 Half Past Three — Headlights paint the wall, and they go. Phone face down. A7 Smoke and Satin — Some nights stay inside your chest long after the music's gone. A8 Two Coats on the Chair — Left the party early, just to come back home. (a duet) A9 Window Seat Sunrise — An overnight bus, a paper cup of coffee, the sky turning gold. B1 Slow Light in the Kitchen — Midnight kettle, one cup. Used to hate this quiet house; now I let it in. B2 Blue Hour Promise — Up all night; birds along the telephone wire. B3 The Last Train Hums — A near-empty carriage, forehead resting on the glass. B4 Hold the Night — You came home late and heavy. I poured something warm. B5 Low Lights, Slow Dance — The record's on the stand, and you're coming down the hallway. B6 Small Hours Prayer — For my brother on the night shift, for the friend I didn't call back. B7 Empty Seats, Full Heart — Last call, chairs up. Played my songs to twenty souls. B8 Heavy Coat, Light Heart — Walking through the snow in grandpa's old wool coat. B9 Goodnight, Old Friend — Record's at the end. Talking to the darkness like I'm talking to a friend.
