Twilight in the Wilderness (1860) by the American Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. This oil on canvas, 101.6 × 162.6 cm, is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Church painted it in his New York studio, likely drawing on field sketches from the remote Maine wilderness, including the Mount Katahdin region, made in the 1850s. The sky shifts from purple through orange to yellow behind glowing altocumulus clouds, and the painting shows the influence of J. M. W. Turner. It was shown at Goupil's gallery in New York in the summer of 1860 and was well received. Made on the eve of the Civil War, it has often been read as a metaphor for a nation sliding into conflict. The Cleveland Museum of Art bought it in 1965. Let this glowing sunset play on your screen for three hours as a calm backdrop for relaxing, studying, working or sleep.
