View of Delft by Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), painted around 1660–1661, shown here for 3 hours as a calm, full-screen art wallpaper for relaxing, studying, working or unwinding.
The oil-on-canvas painting measures about 96.5 × 115.7 cm and is held by the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where it has hung since the museum was established in 1822. It shows Delft seen from the south across the water, under a sky of moving clouds, with the Nieuwe Kerk placed a little closer to the center than it would appear in reality.
Technical analysis has shown that Vermeer worked with a limited range of pigments, including lead white, yellow ochre, natural ultramarine and madder lake. The painting also appears in literature: Marcel Proust is quoted as saying it was the most beautiful painting in the world, and in La Prisonnière the writer Bergotte dies in front of it.
