Week ending June 14 — and almost every metric improved. The one stubborn exception? Sleep. Here's the full report at 51, plus the counterintuitive running advice that's changing how I train.
This week's numbers:
✅ VO2 max UP 0.86
✅ HRV (heart rate variability) UP
✅ Resting heart rate DOWN 0.9 bpm
✅ Blood pressure 110/65 all week
✅ Walked ~7 miles Saturday (13,422 steps)
⚠️ Sleep — still short of my 6-hour target (the weak link)
The big shift this week:
I sat down with a friend who's a long-distance runner, because one of my bucket-list goals is a sub-20-minute 5K (3.1 miles) — and I want to prove you can hit it at any age.
His advice flipped what I thought I knew:
→ Don't chase speed first. That's how you get injured and lose hope.
→ Build your aerobic BASELINE first — oxygen efficiency, breathing, distance, and form. This can take up to 6 months.
→ A strong base makes you a better athlete in ANY sport — running, boxing, swimming, lifting.
→ Form over frequency: watch your cadence, don't overstride.
→ Only after the base is solid do you add speed work.
I'm also working on taking full agency over my health — going beyond vitals (heart rate, blood pressure) into body chemistry: A1C, comprehensive and basic metabolic panels. The biggest driver of long-term healthcare cost is prescription drugs, and the best hedge is acting NOW. More on a company that helps you order these tests directly — coming soon.
Core focus for next week: SLEEP. Wind-down hour, no blue light, dark room, eating window noon–7pm, and quieting the mental chatter.
What gets measured gets improved. See you next Monday.
Cheers,
Lee
