This Rock Shouldn’t Have Gold in It… But It Does | MOTHERLODE SAGA

The first piece I dug up had gold in it, but there was something really strange about it - there was no quartz. It looked more like sandstone or some kind of sedimentary rock, which wasn't what I'd been expecting to find gold in here. Then I started finding more of them! What really got my attention was that these weird gold-bearing rocks seemed to be coming out in line with each other. At that point I stopped worrying about what the rock was supposed to look like and started digging everything because I had a feeling I was getting close to the source. That's one of the things I've learned from spending so much time prospecting for gold - the ground doesn't always follow the textbook. Quartz is obviously one of the biggest things I pay attention to when I'm chasing hard-rock gold, but if I'd ignored these ugly sedimentary-looking rocks because they weren't white quartz, I would have walked right past the gold. As I kept following the targets, I eventually got onto a signal that was still in place beside the quartz vein. You can hear the difference in the detector (that smooth signal I'm always listening for) and once I confirmed it was non-ferrous and started seeing gold in the vein, I knew I was onto something. By the end of the day I'd pulled five pieces. None of them were monsters, but that wasn't really what made this interesting. The important part was what those strange gold-bearing rocks were telling me about what was happening underground and where I needed to keep digging. This video is a good reminder that metal detecting isn't just about finding a nugget and moving on. Sometimes a tiny piece of natural gold is a clue, and if you keep following those clues they can take you back toward the gold vein they came from.
