In 2025, asteroid 2024 YR4 had a 4.3% chance of hitting the Moon on December 22, 2032. In this story, that 4% happens. A rock about 60 meters wide slams into the Moon at around 31,000 mph, with about 6.5 megatons of energy. More than 400 Hiroshima bombs, all at once.
Lani is on her roof in Hawaii, the best place on Earth to watch. The flash is only the beginning. Days later, Moon dust starts arriving, and the biggest danger is one almost nobody can see.

SCIENCE NOTES
• JWST observations in February 2026 ruled out a lunar impact (announced 5 March 2026). 2024 YR4 will miss the Moon by about 21,200 km (~13,000 mi). Everything after the impact is a "what if" scenario, built from published models.
• Impact energy (~6.5 Mt), crater (~1 km), and satellite risk: Wiegert, Brown, Lopes & Connors (2025), Astrophysical Journal Letters.
• Flash brightness, moonquake (~M5), meteor rates, and ~400 kg of meteorites: He et al. (2025), "Observation Timelines for the Potential Lunar Impact of Asteroid 2024 YR4", arXiv:2601.10666.
• Size (53–67 m) and "would not alter the Moon's orbit": NASA Planetary Defense blog, April 2, 2025.

• Apollo 12 moonquake lasting 55+ minutes: Popular Science.
