Experience the raw beauty of a female Great Horned Owl hunting under the cover of darkness on the Mississippi Flyway! Watch as this magnificent apex predator bobs her head to lock onto her prey, pounces into the tall grass, and fills the night with her distinct territorial calls. Did you know you can easily tell the difference between a male and female owl just by listening? 🦉🎵
• Pitch: Females are physically larger than males, but they have smaller voice boxes, giving them a noticeably higher-pitched hoot. The smaller males produce a much deeper, booming call.
• Syllables: Males usually hoot in a standardized pattern of 4 to 5 syllables, while females often use a more irregular rhythm with 6 to 8 syllables in a row.
