The Election Commission of India is facing renewed scrutiny following an investigative report by The Indian Express, which reported that two Election Commissioners recorded at least 14 objections over a period of 10 months regarding decisions and actions of the poll panel. The controversy involves changes to Form 6, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, voter deletions and additions, and the internal decision-making process of the Election Commission. Did CEC Gyanesh Kumar take decisions without adequately consulting the other Election Commissioners? Why were objections reportedly raised on record? Were the changes to Form 6 legally authorised? Can SIR affect electoral outcomes? And what does an internal disagreement within a constitutional institution mean for public trust in elections?
