Why can you be exhausted by four in the afternoon, then suddenly have energy at one in the morning for something nobody asked you to do?
This is a letter about a kind of tiredness that rest does not always fix. About work, autonomy, control, and what happens when more and more of your life is arranged without much input from you.
It explores why ordinary weeks can sometimes drain us more than difficult work we chose ourselves, what research on job control suggests, and how repeatedly having little say can slowly change something deeper than our energy.
Because eventually the cost may not just be exhaustion.
You can get very good at saying “I don’t mind.” Very good at adapting. Very good at being easy to work with and easy to live with. Until somebody asks what you actually want and, strangely, nothing comes back.
