Watch as we descend into the surreal beauty of Nubra, exploring the ancient Diskit Monastery perched on a hill, offering panoramic views of the valley. Diskit Monastery, also known as Diskit Gompa, is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh. Perched majestically on a hill overlooking the Shyok River, its strategic location has given it a significant role in the region's history and spiritual life. The Diskit Monastery was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery's establishment marked the spread of Buddhism into the Nubra Valley and it quickly became a center for religious learning and practice.
It is considered a sub-gompa (a lesser monastery) of the Thiksey Monastery, with its administration overseen by the head lama of Thiksey. Due to its location along the ancient Silk Road, the Nubra Valley has a history of invasions. Diskit Monastery stood firm against aggressions, including a Mughal invasion in 1684, with support from the then-ruler of Ladakh, King Sengge Namgyal. Tibetan Architectural Style: The monastery is a beautiful example of traditional Tibetan architecture, with a labyrinth of prayer halls, meditation rooms, and shrines adorned with intricate frescoes and ancient murals. The Maitreya Buddha Statue: The most striking feature of the monastery is the enormous statue of Maitreya Buddha, the "Future Buddha." Standing over 100 feet tall, the statue was inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2010. Facing the Shyok River and overlooking Pakistan, the statue symbolizes the protection of the village, promotion of world peace, and prevention of future conflict. The monastery houses a statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha), a huge drum, and numerous images of fierce guardian deities. It also has a storehouse containing sacred Tibetan and Mongolian texts, offering insight into Buddhist philosophy and wisdom. According to local legends and Mongol mythology, the monastery was once home to an anti-Buddhist Mongol demon. The demon was defeated, but its severed hand and head are said to be kept within the monastery's sacred spaces, adding a layer of intrigue to its history. Today, the monastery continues to be a seat of learning for monks, who are educated in Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and rituals. It also runs a school for Tibetan children with the support of a non-governmental organization. Diskit Monastery is a vibrant hub of cultural exchange and communal harmony, playing a crucial role in preserving the Buddhist heritage of Ladakh. It hosts the Dosmoche festival, a traditional celebration with masked dances and rituals, which is a major event in the region.
From there, our adventure takes a thrilling turn to the Hunder sand dunes, where we experience the unique sight of double-humped Bactrian camels against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
The next day, we hit the road again for an epic drive to the stunning Pangong Tso, also known as Pangong Lake. Prepare to be mesmerized by its ever-changing shades of blue and the serene beauty that surrounds it. After soaking in the magic, we make our way back to Leh, conquering the formidable Chang La Pass, another of the world's highest motorable roads.
