A sunny October morning in Linz, from the castle hill above the Danube down through the old lanes to the biggest church in Austria. The walk starts on the quiet paths below Linz Castle, passes through the old gates and along the castle walls, and opens onto the Danube with Urfahr and the Pöstlingberg on the other bank. It goes through the castle grounds, under the glass wing of the Schlossmuseum and past the model of the city on the terrace, then down the steep, narrow Hofberg into the Altstadt. From the cafés of the old town it follows the lanes to the Minoritenkirche and the Renaissance arcades of the Landhaus, out to the Promenade and along the Herrenstraße to the Mariendom. The last part is the Landstraße with its trams and church towers, and a tree-lined avenue to a small garden in front of a baroque church. No commentary. No music. Just footsteps on cobblestones, church bells, trams and the city waking up. 📍 Linz, Upper Austria. A fire in 1800 destroyed its south wing, which was rebuilt in glass and steel and opened in 2009 as part of the Schlossmuseum. The Landhaus, built in the 1560s, is the seat of the Upper Austrian government, and Johannes Kepler taught at the school that was housed there. The Mariendom, or New Cathedral, was built from 1862 to 1924. It is the largest church in Austria by capacity, and its tower of almost 135 metres is second only to St. Stephen's in Vienna, by design a little lower.
