Between China’s High-Rises: What’s Life Like in This Urban Village? | Real China 4K

Behind the modern skyline of Chongqing, China, lies a very different side of everyday life. Today, I’m exploring Qilong Village, an old hillside neighborhood in Banan District. Just outside are modern apartment buildings and Chongqing Metro Line 3. But inside the village, narrow pathways wind between tightly packed houses built on different levels of the hillside. Some of the homes here are rented by people who have come to Chongqing for work. Hidden among the residential buildings are small clothing workshops, where people make a living through everyday work. During my walk, I also came across a place where meals were being prepared for factory workers. What surprised me was how quiet some parts of the neighborhood felt. Along my route, I saw only a few people, small local shops, and many narrow passages between the buildings. Qilong Village is also changing. The area has been included in an urban renewal project, with infrastructure improvements underway. This 4K walk is a chance to explore a different side of urban China — not just its skyscrapers and modern shopping districts, but the ordinary places where people live, work, and build their lives.
