Your first week in an inherited codebase is a horror movie, and every room in the house is a real technical problem.
In this episode, I take you through a week at a new engineering job. The README that's six years out of date. Dashboards that never tell you anything. The alert that resolves itself before your laptop wakes up. The legacy function everyone is afraid to touch. A locked service nobody has access to, a p99 latency spike nobody can explain, and a staging environment that doesn't match production. And then the newest room in the house... It's all framed around Thir13en Ghosts, a house that turns out to be a machine running on ghosts you can only see with the right glasses (spoilers?). In software, those glasses are observability.
00:00 Day one, make setup fails
01:44 Intro: every inherited codebase is a haunted house
03:09 Monday and Tuesday: the README, dashboards, the 3am alert
06:20 Wednesday: the legacy function
09:20 Thursday: the locked service and the cold spot
12:30 Friday: staging, Friday deploys, and the Ouija board
15:46 Checklist: signs you're living in a haunted codebase
16:41 Close: the 1960 ghost viewer
If you're starting a new job, onboarding new engineers, or living with technical debt you didn't create, this episode is for you.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) the haunting isn't supernatural, it's just undocumented.
