In 2027, we will mark 100 years since 175 delegates from across the globe convened in Brussels to establish the League Against Imperialism and Colonial Oppression (LAI). The Congress aimed to create a global mass anti-imperialist movement, and for several years, the LAI successfully inspired and supported anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles worldwide. Eventually, it would inspire the 1955 Bandung Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement.
One hundred years later, the mission of anti-imperialist unity is no less urgent. The genocide in Palestine, the U.S. siege of Cuba, the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, European militarisation, the war on Iran,... these are all signs of the military might of U.S. imperialism and its allies.
While imperialist aggression is certainly overwhelming, resistance is also building. Today, the need to recover the 'Bandung Spirit' that emanated from this 1927 meeting in Brussels and similar events is greater than ever. That is why a group of conveners took the initiative for a centennial commemoration, supported by an impressive list of global networks.
The webinar announced the activities planned for March 12-14, 2027, in Brussels to commemorate the centennial of anti-imperialist struggle. Five of the conveners—Aleida Guevara, Jeremy Corbyn, Vijay Prashad, Varsha Gandikota, and Omar Barghouti—will explain what is going to happen and why it is important.
