A 23-year-old woman, Boitumelo Gift Mashita, was shot and killed at about 5:45am on Monday, 28 September 2026, in the Temong section of Tembisa while reportedly on her way to work. Police initially opened a murder and robbery investigation after her belongings were taken.
But hours later, there was a major development.
Police said investigators had identified Boitumelo's estranged husband as a person of interest and the SAPS Tembisa Tracking Team was tracing him. Midrand police subsequently informed them that his vehicle had been found within their policing precinct with his body inside.
Police say it is believed he may have ingested an unknown substance. No foul play is suspected at this stage, and a post-mortem will be conducted to establish the exact cause of his death. Midrand police will also register an inquest.
The circumstances surrounding Boitumelo's murder remain under investigation.
Her family had raised questions about whether the shooting was actually a robbery and had reportedly raised concerns about someone close to her. Those are family concerns and allegations, not established facts, and investigators still have to establish what happened.
Police have also said that preliminary investigations have not established a link between this murder and the recent cases involving women's bodies found elsewhere in Ekurhuleni.
In this video, we look at what happened, the latest development involving the person of interest, and the questions that remain unanswered.
What do you make of this latest development? Let's discuss it respectfully in the comments.
