Want to learn how to air out on a BMX bike? In this beginner BMX tutorial, I'll break down how to start getting ABOVE the coping on a quarter pipe and safely bring the bike back into the ramp. Before trying to air out, get comfortable carving and pumping a quarter pipe. You DON'T need to be able to 180—you can start by carving your airs at an angle and gradually straighten them out as you get more comfortable. In this tutorial, we'll cover: • How to carve a quarter pipe • How pumping helps you generate speed and height • How fast to approach the ramp • When to extend your legs • How to pop off the coping • Why you need to pull the bike back toward the ramp • Turning your head and spotting your landing • Pointing the front wheel back into the transition • What to do if you're about to case • How smaller and larger quarter pipes ride differently One of the biggest keys is LOOKING where you want to land. As you air out, turn your head, spot the transition and point your front wheel toward your landing. The rest of the bike will follow. Start small, get comfortable with the motion and gradually work your way higher above the coping. Once you get comfortable airing quarters, it opens up an entirely new side of skatepark BMX riding.
