Some houseplants seem determined to ignore every care rule you have ever been told.
Ferns supposedly need constantly moist soil, cacti should stay dry, ZZ plants thrive in low light and no plant should ever be left sitting in water. Those rules can be useful, but they do not work for every plant.
In this video, I’m looking at seven houseplants and plant groups that completely challenge common houseplant advice. These are the rebels of the plant world, including “easy” plants that can become surprisingly difficult and unusual plants that need almost the exact opposite of what you might expect.
I’ll be talking about golden pothos that develop mysterious yellow leaves, ZZ plants that prefer considerably more light than their reputation suggests, jungle cacti that need different treatment from desert cacti and epiphytic ferns that should not be cared for like traditional terrestrial ferns.
I’ll also explain why lucky bamboo is not actually bamboo or an aquatic plant, why some carnivorous plants are perfectly happy sitting in water and how Tillandsia air plants survive without using traditional roots to absorb moisture.
The problem is not always that houseplant advice is wrong. It is that most advice simplifies something that is incredibly complicated. Different plants have evolved in completely different habitats, so blindly applying one general rule can sometimes cause more harm than good.
Plants covered include:
Golden pothos
ZZ plants
Jungle cacti
Blue star ferns and other epiphytic ferns
Lucky bamboo
Carnivorous plants
Tillandsia and air plants
Have you ever owned a plant that behaved completely differently from what every care guide promised? Tell me about your rebellious houseplant in the comments.
