Pontypool starts with one of the strangest zombie premises in horror: the infection spreads through the English language.
That could have stayed a clever gimmick. Instead, the movie makes language feel alive in the worst possible way. Words get stuck. Meaning breaks down. The infected repeat themselves until communication turns into imitation, and a radio station built to spread information becomes part of the same system carrying the outbreak.
In this video, I’m looking at how Pontypool uses speech, repetition, radio, memetic spread, misinformation, cannibalism, and the choice of English specifically to turn language into the threat. The French warning and the film’s Canadian context all make that choice feel bigger than a random horror rule.
Spoilers for Pontypool.
