From a €12 Room to an Outside Bathtub: Belum Rainforest Resort | Malaysia Road Trip Day 13

Still in Malaysia – Day 27: from a €12 room five nights ago to an outside bathtub at Belum Rainforest Resort, on Temenggor Lake in the Royal Belum rainforest. Day 13 of my Malaysia road trip: 82 km on the East-West Highway from Jeli, past an elephant warning sign, a Dutch windmill at a rest stop, a school in the middle of the jungle, and elephant dung on the road. The room: €88.46 a night with breakfast (about RM 400 / $99), and they gave me a free upgrade to a bigger room. Five nights ago, in Jerteh, I paid €12.76 (RM 56). In the afternoon the infinity pool, monkeys on the railing, and in 10 minutes the weather went from sunshine to a storm. At dinner a staff member told me when the wild elephants come out. What it cost (2 Nov 2026, RM 1 = $0.2465 / €0.2208): Gunung Reng (entrance + parking): free Lunch, chicken curry + coffee: RM 43 ($10.60 / €9.50) Dinner, spaghetti bolognese: RM 28 ($6.90 / €6.18) Room incl. breakfast: €88.46 (RM 400.57 / $98.73) Question for you: on a long trip, would you spend more on one special night, or keep every night cheap?
