What if our worship doesn’t make God greater? What if our praise doesn’t lift Him higher? What if God was already God before the first human voice ever sang His name? “Worship: God Doesn’t Need It” explores the startling message of Psalm 50: God is not dependent on us. He does not need our hands to accomplish His purposes. He does not need our shoulders to lift Him higher. He does not need our voices to establish His greatness. He does not need our praise in order to reign. Before anyone praised Him, He spoke light into darkness. He called the stars by name. The oceans obeyed their boundaries. The mountains stood where He placed them. And throughout Scripture, God acts without needing humanity to hold Him up. He parts seas, brings down walls, commands creation, saves, delivers, takes on flesh, bears the cross, and breaks the chains of death. Psalm 50 confronts the idea that worship somehow supplies God with something He lacks. “If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.” God is not made greater by our praise. He is already great. We do not enthrone Him. He already reigns. We do not make Him God. He already is. And yet we praise Him. That question leads directly into the next song in the Worship series: If God does not need my praise... Why do I need to praise? SCRIPTURE BEHIND THE SONG Psalm 50:10–12 — Every creature belongs to God. “If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.” Acts 17:24–25 — God does not live in temples made by human hands and is not served by human hands as though He needed anything. He is the One who gives life and breath to everyone. Genesis 1:3 — God spoke, and light appeared. Psalm 147:4 — God determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Psalm 104:9 — God established boundaries for the waters. Job 38:8–11 — God commands the sea and establishes its limits. Jonah 1:17 — God provided the great fish that preserved Jonah. Joshua 6 — The walls of Jericho fell by the power and command of God. Exodus 14 — God divided the sea and made a path through it. John 1:14 — The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Philippians 2:6–8 — Christ humbled Himself, took human form, and became obedient to death on a cross. Colossians 2:13–15 — Through the cross Christ triumphed over the powers that held humanity captive. 1 Corinthians 15:54–57 — Through Christ, death is swallowed up in victory. Psalm 115:4–8 — Idols need human hands and those who trust in them become like them. The true God stands in complete contrast. 2 Corinthians 3:18 — As we behold the Lord, we are transformed increasingly into His image.
