What is an idol? Psalm 115 describes gods made by human hands. They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear, and feet but cannot walk. They appear powerful. Yet someone has to make them. Someone has to carry them. Someone has to speak for them. Someone has to keep them standing. “Worship: Idols Need It” asks whether humanity ever really stopped making idols, or whether we simply gave them new names. Money. Power. Success. Desire. Safety. Family. Intelligence. Recognition. Even the blessings of God can become idols when the gift takes the place of the Giver. What happens when something created takes the place that belongs to God? Scripture warns that idolatry does more than demand our attention. It shapes us. “We make them in our image Then become what we praise.” And eventually the question becomes: If these gods are so powerful, why do they need our voices? Why do they need our hands? Why do they need our shoulders to hold them up? And why would we make ourselves their slaves? SCRIPTURE BEHIND THE SONG Psalm 115:4–8 — The idols of the nations are made by human hands. They cannot speak, see, hear, feel, or walk. Those who make and trust in them become like them. Exodus 20:3 — “You shall have no other gods before me.” Jeremiah 10:5 — Idols must be carried because they cannot walk. Isaiah 44:9–20 — A man makes an idol with his own hands and then bows down to what he has made. Romans 1:25 — Humanity exchanges the truth about God for a lie and worships and serves created things rather than the Creator. Matthew 6:24 — Jesus warns that we cannot serve both God and money. Colossians 3:5 — Greed is called idolatry. Genesis 11:4 — At Babel humanity says, “Let us make a name for ourselves.” Exodus 32 — Israel makes the golden calf and gives worship to something created by human hands. 1 Corinthians 8:4–6 — There may be many things called “gods,” but for us there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. The names change. The temptation does not. WORSHIP SERIES — 1 OF 4 WORSHIP: IDOLS NEED IT Inspired by Psalm 115 LYRICS [Chorus] They need our voices To spread their lies They need our hands To give them praise They need our shoulders To tower above us To make their demands They seem so mighty Yet need our hands To do their deeds An idol needs us [Verse 1] Molech took the children Now we call it choice Astarte crowned desire Now Pride gives it a voice Mammon still wants riches Baal still promises gain Caesar offers power If we bow before his name Babel cries, “Be noticed” Make the whole world know your name New names, the same old gods And worship stays the same [Chorus] They need our voices To spread their lies They need our hands To give them praise They need our shoulders To tower above us To make their demands They seem so mighty Yet need our hands To do their deeds An idol needs us [Verse 2] Nike crowns achievement Success becomes our worth Plutus promises wealth We call abundance faith Vesta guards the home Till home becomes the throne Fortuna offers ease Till safety owns our soul Athena crowns our minds Till being right is god Golden Calf wears Sunday clothes When gifts replace the Lord [Bridge] We give them our voices Till their lies become ours We give them our hands Till their deeds become ours We lift them above us Then take on their ways We make them in our image Then become what we praise [Final Chorus] They need our voices To spread their lies They need our hands To give them praise They need our shoulders To tower above us To make their demands They seem so mighty Yet need our hands To do their deeds An idol needs us [Male Voice] Then God, Then God, Then God asks us: Why believe their lies And give them praise? If they're so mighty Why do they need you? Why lift them higher To become their slave?
