Not because he was a government official. And not because they had opened a file on him. They were watching Ivana. Ivana Trump had escaped communist Czechoslovakia. On April 7, 1977, two days before her wedding in New York, her father Miloš flew to America, and at the airport someone opened his suitcase. Two cut-glass bowls. Thirty-seven Canadian dollars. Someone wrote it down. Six months later, Czechoslovakia's secret police, the StB, registered Miloš under number 28933 as a "důvěrník", a confidential contact. A year after that, Ivana got a file of her own: number 29834. The calls were monitored. The mail was watched. And by October 1988, an StB report said Donald Trump intended to run for president, while a regional intelligence chief would later describe Trump as being "in our line of sight." Then the mirror turned. In March 1989, the FBI opened its own counterintelligence inquiry into Ivana, because of her Czechoslovak ties. It closed in 1991 with no outstanding leads. And in 1992, the Czech Constitutional Court ruled that a důvěrník was not, by that category alone, a conscious collaborator. So was there a Trump file? No. There was something stranger: a state that never needed to recruit Donald Trump to watch him. It only needed his wife to have a family. This film tests its own title. It separates what the records show from what the internet would prefer, and it never claims Donald Trump was a spy.
