☀️ What if the Sun shrank 1% every day? Earth freezes over long before it goes dark. The Sun loses 1% of its width every day, and nothing else changes. Its light fades slowly, but Earth gets cold fast: frost in August, a frozen city at noon, and after 1,231 days the Sun collapses into a black hole. We watch a city street, a forest valley, a stormy coast and the whole planet from space, over days, years and thousands of years. ❄️ August 6: the first frost of the year, then snow, in the middle of summer 🌊 Inland it's -21 °C (-6 °F), but the sea is still 15 °C (59 °F), so it steams and feeds thundersnow 🌲 At -28 °C (-18 °F), frozen sap splits tree trunks open, and the frozen ground cracks in frost quakes 🏙️ By day 186 it's -70 °C (-94 °F) at noon, colder than any town has ever been ⚫ Day 1,231: just 6 km (4 miles) wide, the Sun becomes a black hole 💧 At about -195 °C (-319 °F), the air we breathe turns to liquid and rains down 📐 What we assume Only the Sun's size changes: it loses 1% of its width a day but keeps its weight and its surface heat, so Earth stays in its orbit, even around the black hole. Everything after that is real physics. How fast each place cools comes from a simple heat-balance model built on real data, so the days and years are estimates, and the times for the air to turn liquid and freeze are a rough model. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 The Sun starts shrinking 0:23 A cooler summer in the city 0:55 The northern lights fade 1:07 Frost and snow in August 1:29 Sea smoke and thundersnow 1:59 Trees split and the ground cracks 2:26 Blizzard and blackouts 2:49 The cities go dark 3:09 -70 °C at noon 3:33 The sea freezes 3:57 The Sun is as wide as Earth 4:10 Noon goes dark 4:41 The Sun becomes a black hole 5:00 The last sunlight 5:11 Dry-ice frost 5:30 The air turns to liquid 5:44 The air freezes 6:06 Earth freezes over 6:16 The black hole 📚 Sources Caltech, "If the Sun ceased to exist right now, how long would mankind survive?"
