In 1815 M. Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel is Bishop of D——, an old man of about seventy-five. His episcopal palace adjoins the hospital. He counts the beds, and tells the director: "There are thirty-six of you, in five or six small rooms. There are three of us here, and we have room for sixty." On the following day the thirty-six patients are installed in the Bishop's palace, and the Bishop is settled in the hospital.
Listen to Part One of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, in Isabel F. Hapgood's English translation, as a full-cast audiobook: the Bishop, Mademoiselle Baptistine, Madame Magloire, the old member of the Convention, the senator and every other speaking part each keep one consistent voice from the first line to the last, and a separate narrator reads the story.
The people of D—— call him Monseigneur Welcome. He lives with his sister, Mademoiselle Baptistine, and their servant, Madame Magloire, eats from silver dishes, and keeps two large candlesticks of massive silver inherited from a great-aunt. He crosses the mountains where the bandit Cravatte is hiding, and visits the conventionary G—— as he lies dying. Then, early in the month of October, 1815, about an hour before sunset, a man who was travelling on foot enters the little town of D——, and finds every door closed to him.
English subtitles appear on screen, and English captions (CC) are available too.
Narration: AI voices (American English), one fixed voice per speaker.
