The average new vehicle price in America just topped $50,000. Here is why the era of affordable cars is officially over.
The average transaction price for a new vehicle in America has surpassed $50,000 for the first time this year. While domestic buyers face rising costs, Chinese automakers are pivoting away from aggressive price wars to prioritize long-term profitability. We analyze the shift in new vehicle prices and what this means for the global market.
Meanwhile, BYD has quietly become the second best-selling brand in a major English-speaking country, signaling a fundamental change in the auto industry. Beijing has issued new guidance effectively telling manufacturers to stop undercutting competitors, signaling the end of the cheap car era. This strategy represents a more significant threat than the previous race to the bottom.

This video puts three things together that have not been put together anywhere else:
• Australia, August 2026 — the second best-selling brand in the country was BYD, four years after it sold its first car there. Not with a price war: a $58,000 pickup, a six-year warranty, a dealer network. Australia has no car industry and no tariff on Chinese cars, which makes it the one English-speaking country where you can watch what happens when the wall is simply not there.
• China at home — retail down 10.1%, the eighth month in a row, while factories shipped 16% more. The difference went to a ship: 518,000 electric cars exported in August, up 154%. Ten million this year — two thirds of everything America buys.
• The document — what it actually says, why Beijing wrote it after burning its own industry down to $2,000 of gross profit a car, and why "stop being cheap" is a bigger threat than cheap ever was.
Three phases: copy, undercut, replace. The third one just started.
