Twenty-five 15-minute suppers is what I pulled straight out of Depression-era recipe collections, and one of them fed a family of five for a whole week on five dollars flat. I sat down with a 1931 radio recipe book, a pencil, and about a hundred assumptions I was wrong about, because none of these women were cooking slow, sad, simmer-all-day meals. They were exhausted, they had one skillet and fifteen minutes, and they built dinner fast.
This video walks through all 25, starting with Hoover stew and the poor man's meal, then into the block that genuinely changed how I cook — toast as a foundation, not a snack, carrying creamed chipped beef, Welsh rarebit, milk toast, and onion soup au gratin on the back of a four-minute white sauce almost nobody makes anymore. From there we hit the pot suppers — split pea, potato, corn chowder, and Clara Cannucciari's real pasta and peas — plus the mistakes I made trying to relearn skills my own grandmother never had to think twice about. I also lay out why beef prices today make these old tricks more useful than nostalgic, with the actual USDA numbers behind it. 🍳🥣
If you're tired of throwing money at boxed dinners for a skill that takes four minutes to learn, stick around — if you find this useful, subscribing helps more of these forgotten suppers find their way back to your table.
Mabel Depression Kitchen digs up the recipes your grandmother's grandmother cooked from memory, not a box, and hands them back to you plain and usable.
