Griff's Magic Theatre 27th May 2026

Another Wednesday night, another hour-ish spent wandering through the stranger corners of the record collection with Griff’s Magic Theatre. This week’s slightly shorter-than-planned excursion begins with Plasticland sounding pleasantly detached from reality, crashes headlong into The Pink Fairies and The Pretty Things, then drifts through Syd-era Pink Floyd, dusty psych oddities, lonely highways, monkey beats, and one of the heaviest endings ever committed to tape. Along the way, Roy Orbison turns up selling sweets, Wilson Pickett unleashes rhythmic chaos, H.P. Lovecraft encourages communal harmony, and Robert Plant somehow makes staring through a rain-covered windscreen feel spiritually important. Sadly, this week’s show is a little shorter due to the magical modern wonder known as copyright enforcement. Two excellent King Crimson tracks were removed after YouTube and Aviator Management GmbH on behalf of DGM decided the world simply could not be trusted to hear “Cadence and Cascade” and “Cat Food” in the middle of a small independent radio show from Yorkshire. So if the programme feels slightly leaner than usual, you can blame the invisible bureaucratic goblins of the digital age rather than Griff himself. Still, there’s plenty left to enjoy: psych nuggets, fuzzed-up garage rock, dreamy melancholy, strange little masterpieces, and at least one song title that sounds like a warning painted on the side of a damp 1970s motorway café. As always, the records were selected with great care, mild confusion, and whatever cosmic force keeps leading Griff toward songs about roads, monkeys, mouths, sweets, and going to pot. Put the kettle on, stare thoughtfully into middle distance, and join us.
