In this video, I walk through IELTS Reading Passage 1: “A review of Nigel Townson’s The British at Play”, covering Questions 1 to 13. I use a keyword table to show how to match the words in each question to the words in the passage, so you can find every answer quickly and with confidence.
This passage is a book review about the social power of sport in Britain and around the world. It looks at how sport connects to social class, gender, violence, commercialism and national identity, and ends with the reviewer’s one criticism of the book.
📌 What’s covered in this video:
Questions 1-8: Summary completion (no more than two words and/or a number)
Questions 9-13: Matching sentence endings (A-G)
💡 Skills you’ll practise:
Building a keyword table: question words → passage words
Spotting paraphrases (e.g. “sometimes used to start conversations” = “one of relatively few topics acceptable when initiating social interaction”)
Matching sentence endings by meaning, not by similar words
Staying within the word limit in summary completion
🏟️ Topics discussed in the passage:
Sport as big business and a powerful social force
“In groups,” “out groups” and football hooliganism
How the media covers fan behaviour
Women’s growing role in sports media
The health-and-fitness boom and images of the “perfect” body
Advertising, sponsorship and the commercialisation of football clubs
The reviewer’s criticism: the book doesn’t explain why people do sport
Perfect for IELTS Academic candidates who want to improve their skimming and scanning, paraphrase recognition and accuracy on summary completion and sentence-ending questions.
